How UCAT Scores Are Calculated
Raw marks from each cognitive section are converted to a scale of 300–900 using a statistical equating process. The three cognitive sections (VR, DM, QR) are summed to give a total of 900–2700. SJT is not included in this total.

How are UCAT deciles calculated?↓
After each exam sitting, all candidate scores are ranked and divided into 10 equal-sized groups. Decile 10 is the top 10% of candidates, decile 1 is the bottom 10%. The UCAT consortium publishes the decile thresholds after results are released each year — they shift slightly cohort to cohort.
Does the SJT band count towards my total UCAT score?↓
No. The SJT band (1–4) is reported separately and never added to the 900–2700 cognitive total. Many medical schools use the SJT band as an independent filter — a Band 4 can disqualify an otherwise high scorer.
What score do I need for UK medical schools?↓
Thresholds vary by school and shift yearly, but as a rough guide: decile 9-10 (roughly 2100+) is competitive for the most score-focused schools; decile 7-8 (around 2010-2100) is competitive at most UK medical schools; decile 5-6 (1880-2010) is borderline and worth pairing with a strong SJT band.
