UCAT Score Calculator 2026

UCAT Score Calculator: Find Your Decile and Percentile

Your UCAT score only matters relative to everyone else who sat the test.

The UCAT does not have a fixed pass mark. Your score is ranked against everyone in your cohort, and medical schools use deciles and percentiles β€” not raw totals β€” to make shortlisting decisions. The total scaled score runs from 900 to 2700 (300–900 per cognitive section Γ— 3 sections), and your SJT is banded 1 through 4 separately. Understanding where your score sits in the percentile distribution is the first step to knowing which schools are realistic targets and which sections need the most work. Applaa tracks your practice scores and estimates your current percentile in real time.

How UCAT Scores Are Calculated

Raw marks from each cognitive section are converted to a scale of 300–900 using a statistical equating process. The three cognitive sections (VR, DM, QR) are summed to give a total of 900–2700. SJT is not included in this total.

  • βœ“Each correct answer in cognitive sections earns 1 raw mark; raw marks are converted to scaled scores
  • βœ“Total score = VR + DM + QR (900–2700 range, though 900 is the minimum achievable)
  • βœ“SJT is scored separately and reported as Band 1 (highest) through Band 4 (lowest)
  • βœ“Decile tables are published after each exam sitting β€” your score's meaning shifts with each cohort

What Score Do You Need for Each Medical School?

Medical school UCAT thresholds vary and are updated annually. Using the decile system helps predict competitiveness regardless of year-to-year score fluctuations.

  • βœ“Top 10th decile (90th percentile): typically 2900+; competitive for the most score-focused schools
  • βœ“7th–9th decile (70th–90th percentile): score of 2520–2900; competitive at the majority of UK medical schools
  • βœ“5th–6th decile (50th–70th percentile): 2280–2520; borderline for most schools β€” target a Band 1–2 SJT
  • βœ“Below 5th decile: consider extending preparation and resitting; focus on your two lowest-scoring sections

Frequently asked questions

What is the average UCAT score in 2026?

The average total UCAT score is typically around 2480–2520 (approximately 620–630 per section). Scoring above 2520 puts you above the median, while 2700+ places you in the upper quartile of all candidates.

How are UCAT deciles calculated?

After each exam sitting, all candidate scores are ranked and divided into 10 equal groups. If you're in the 8th decile, you scored higher than 70–80% of all candidates. Decile tables are published by the UCAT consortium after results are released.

Does the SJT band count towards my total UCAT score?

No. The SJT band (1–4) is reported separately and never added to the 900–2700 cognitive total. However, many medical schools use the SJT band as an independent filter β€” a Band 4 can disqualify an otherwise high scorer.

Can I use a UCAT score calculator before the exam?

Yes β€” practice score calculators help you track progress during preparation. Applaa estimates your current percentile based on your mock scores across all 4 sections, so you know exactly how much improvement is needed before exam day.
