GCSE Biology Paper 1: What Topics Are Actually Covered

GCSE Biology Paper 1 (the specification most schools in England follow is AQA's) covers four topic areas: Cell Biology, Organisation, Infection and Response, and Bioenergetics. It's a written exam lasting 1 hour 45 minutes and worth 100 marks, sat by both Foundation and Higher tier students, usually in May of Year 11. Everything else โ€” ecology, inheritance, homeostasis and the nervous system โ€” is saved for Paper 2.

The Four Topic Areas in Paper 1

If your exam board is AQA, these are the topics you need to have covered before you walk into the hall. Other boards (Edexcel, OCR Gateway, OCR 21st Century, WJEC) split their biology content slightly differently, so it's always worth double-checking your own school's specification and past papers rather than assuming the AQA split applies exactly to you.

  • Cell Biology โ€” animal, plant and bacterial cell structure, specialised cells (sperm cells, root hair cells, nerve cells, muscle cells), microscopy and magnification calculations, cell division (mitosis and the cell cycle), stem cells, and diffusion, osmosis and active transport.
  • Organisation โ€” cell to tissue to organ to organ system, enzymes and digestion, the structure of the heart and blood vessels, the lungs and gas exchange, plant tissues and transpiration, and the causes, prevention and treatment of non-communicable diseases such as cardiovascular disease and cancer.
  • Infection and Response โ€” communicable diseases caused by viruses, bacteria, fungi and protists (including named examples like measles, salmonella, malaria and rose black spot), how the human body defends itself against pathogens, vaccination, antibiotics and antiseptics, monoclonal antibodies, and plant disease and defence responses.
  • Bioenergetics โ€” photosynthesis (the word and symbol equation, limiting factors, and interpreting rate graphs), and respiration, including the difference between aerobic and anaerobic respiration and how your body responds during exercise.

A useful way to remember the theme running through Paper 1 is that it's mostly about what happens inside the organism โ€” cells, organs, energy transfer and disease โ€” rather than how organisms interact with their environment or how traits are inherited, which is Paper 2 territory.

How Paper 1 Differs From Paper 2

Paper 2 covers Homeostasis and Response, Inheritance, Variation and Evolution, and Ecology. Students sometimes assume the two papers are interchangeable revision-wise because "it's all biology," but the topic split matters for how you plan your revision timetable. Paper 1 leans heavily on structure-and-function reasoning (why does a cell look the way it does, given its job?) and on processes you can picture happening at a microscopic or biochemical level โ€” diffusion across a membrane, an enzyme fitting a substrate, a pathogen triggering an immune response. Paper 2 leans more on ecosystems, genetics and the nervous and hormonal systems, which involve more graphical data and genetic diagrams like Punnett squares.

Both papers are worth the same 100 marks and the same proportion of your final grade, and both mix multiple-choice, short-answer, structured and extended (6-mark) questions. Foundation tier papers use simpler command words and smaller mark allocations per question; Higher tier papers ask for more sustained written reasoning and can draw on the same content but expect a deeper level of application.

Exam Technique for Biology Paper 1

Knowing the content is only half the battle โ€” how you answer the questions on the day matters just as much.

6-mark questions

Every Biology paper includes at least one extended-response question worth 6 marks, often on a topic like the immune response, the structure of the heart, or comparing aerobic and anaerobic respiration. Examiners are marking these against a levels-based mark scheme, not a simple checklist, so structure your answer in a logical order (cause then effect, or step-by-step through a process), use specific scientific vocabulary rather than vague description, and make sure every point you write actually answers the question asked rather than just showing everything you know on the topic.

Required practicals

AQA's specification includes several required practicals relevant to Paper 1, including microscopy (calculating magnification), investigating osmosis in potato cylinders, testing food samples for sugars, starches, proteins and fats, and investigating the effect of light intensity on the rate of photosynthesis. Exam questions regularly draw directly on these practicals, asking you to describe a method, identify a variable that should be controlled, evaluate a set of results, or explain a source of error. Don't just memorise the practical โ€” make sure you understand why each step is done, because that's what gets tested.

  • Always state units when quoting a measurement or calculation.
  • Read the number of marks available and match the number of points you make to it.
  • For calculation questions, show your working โ€” you can pick up method marks even if the final answer is wrong.
  • Practise past paper questions under timed conditions, not just reading revision notes, since recognising a question type is a different skill from recalling facts.
