The exact contents vary slightly by board and by specification version, so it's worth downloading the current PDF for your board directly from Pearson Edexcel or AQA rather than relying on an old copy — formulae have occasionally been added or removed between specification updates.

What You Still Have to Memorise

This is the part students consistently underestimate. Even with the booklet in front of you, examiners expect fluency with a set of "core" results that aren't printed anywhere in the exam. Well-established examples that A-Level Maths students are expected to know from memory include:

  • The core differentiation and integration rules, including d/dx(sin x) = cos x, d/dx(cos x) = −sin x, and the derivatives/integrals of standard polynomial and exponential terms

  • Exact trig values for 0°, 30°, 45°, 60° and 90°
  • The binomial expansion for positive integer powers (as opposed to the general expansion, which is given)
  • Algebraic rearrangements of formulae that are given in a different form to how you need to use them

That last point catches a lot of students out. Boards frequently print a formula in one arrangement — for example a suvat equation solved for displacement — and then ask a question that requires you to rearrange it to solve for time or acceleration instead. The booklet gives you the formula; it doesn't do the algebra for you.

  3. Practise applying formulae, not just reciting them. Work through past paper questions with the booklet closed for the formulae on your must-memorise list, and only open it for the ones genuinely provided.
  4. Time yourself. Fluency means being able to produce the right formula and start applying it within seconds, not minutes.
  5. Re-test the rearrangements. If a formula in the booklet is given in one form, practise rearranging it for every variable it could plausibly be asked for.
